Sharp-shooting Stewart is red hot for Council Rock South

FAIRLESS HILLS — A couple of years ago, Michael Stewart decided he needed to fine tune the mechanics of his jump shot.

And he chose a truly 21st Century method.

“YouTube videos,” he said.

Now a senior at Council Rock South, the new and improved jump shot is paying dividends for Stewart and the Golden Hawks.

He is currently second on the team in scoring at 12.5 points per game, and in Tuesday’s big road win at Pennsbury — the first time in school history that a South team won at Pennsbury — he pumped in 23 points, including three 3-pointers.

For a shooter, practice and repetition are the key.

“Catching and shooting on the catch,” he said. “Working with the shooting machine and coming off of ball screens and making sure you’re in the spots you need to be in. I practice it a lot.”

But Stewart is not just a shooter. To stay on the floor for coach Chris Clark’s team, you have to play defense too, and in a situation like Tuesday when senior Jack Rebholz was out of the game with foul trouble, Stewart was playing point guard some of the time as well.

“We’ve been working hard in practice,” Stewart said about his team, which heads into Friday with an 8-4 record overall and is tied for second at 3-1 in the Suburban One League National Conference. “Clark is always harping on defense, so we take pride in that.”

As for playing point guard, he doesn’t mind switching over when the situation calls for it.

“I like doing that sometimes,” Stewart said. “It’s a good change. It’s a different kind of game.”
