The Golden Hawks shook off a slow start to complete a season sweep of rival Council Rock North and all but wrapped up a spot in the District One Class 6A Tournament.

HOLLAND — On the basketball court, winning has never been easy for Kevin McNamee at Council Rock South.

Not as a junior when he and his teammates went 9-13 and missed out on the playoffs, and not this season as the Golden Hawks have found a way to win a bunch of close games on the way to a 15-7 record and an 8-4 second-place finish in the Suburban One League National Conference.

Finding a way to win games like Thursday’s regular-season finale against rival Council Rock North is an area this team has probably improved the most. Trailing most of the way in a game that was never more five points, the Golden Hawks didn’t panic.

And in the fourth quarter, that senior leadership took over and they pulled out a 45-42 win.

“Coming down the stretch, it’s just been about working as a team,” McNamee said. “Playing as a team and trusting one another, making the right pass, looking for each other. Basically, we trust each other. We’re a family, basically.”

It won’t be official until Sunday’s seeding meeting, but CR South entered Thursday at No.18 in the district power rankings, and 24 teams qualify.

“It means the most to us,” McNamee said. “We’ve been dreaming of this since we were kids. Our senior class has been playing together since like fifth grade. We love each other. To get this, it’s just amazing.”

For McNamee, aside from enjoying this success with so many of his friends that he grew up playing with as teammates, he has another reason to look forward to the playoffs.

“The last time, we made the playoffs, my brother (Ryan) was a senior,” he said. “That was four years ago. His was the last South team to make the playoffs.

“I was saying (at the beginning of the season), ‘Hey man, I think we’ve got a team this year. I think we can do it.’ I had to show him.

“Beating the record from his senior year, it’s great. I’m always bugging him.”
