Byron Hopkins turned in a dazzling effort to lead Upper Moreland

UPPER MORELAND 51, UPPER DUBLIN 44

Byron Hopkins turned in a dazzling 26-point point effort to lead the Golden Bears to the conference win. The sophomore – who buried a pair of 3-pointers and converted 10-of-13 at the foul line – scored 17 points in the first half, propelling the Golden Bears to a 33-19 halftime lead.

Byron has been playing really good basketball for a while, and tonight he was awesome,” UM coach Sean Feeley said. “He is now the point and he is doing a great job of finding the balance between scoring and getting others involved. What I like most about him is that he a really good defender and he is coachable.”

Also for UM, Tyler Ibbotson added nine points on three 3-pointers. Jake Tiernan and Matt Tiernan each had six points.

“Tyler Ibbotson again was steady with big shots and boards,” Feeley said. “Both Matt Tiernan and Jake Tiernan, two sophomores, are playing big minutes and are really growing and playing great minutes. Those two kids are the first to show up and usually last to leave. Jake, who we all are on to be more aggressive, hit two late 3s that were huge. Before that, we were cold and those shots were huge, Without those, I’m not sure we win tonight. Matt Tiernan was great on defense and battled (Drew) Stover, who is a tremendous player.

“Again, I’m proud of our defensive effort. Mckie Walker and Ryan Schernecke were really good again off the bench.”

Stover led the Flying Cardinals with 16 points, and Amare Johnson added 10. Both players had a pair of 3-pointers. Jason Williams added six points.

Upper Moreland (12-5, 6-5 SOL) will host William Tennent in a non-league game Thursday, and Upper Dublin (8-10, 3-8) will travel to Plymouth Whitemarsh Friday.
